The story.

Beat Bugs is a children’s animated series following the charming and humorous adventures of five bugs who live in an overgrown, American backyard. The show creatively integrates popular Beatles songs into the storyline of each episode, using reimagined recordings by an array of modern artists.

The Director, Josh Wakely said he spent nearly three years trying to convince The Beatles’ publishers to allow the songs to be used:

“By the time I got the green light I had all 52 episodes fully conceived with every character. They had never given the rights before to anything like this and they kept repeating it to me. I didn’t get the rights because I had more contacts or more money – it was because they creatively got what I wanted to do. I wanted to bring the best music catalogue of all time to a new generation.”

A visual and aural sensation that’s captivated families across the globe...

A glimpse into the process.

We worked closely with award-winning Sam Hayward, the project’s Sound Supervisor and Re-recording Mixer, along with the American music recording and mixing team. Given the show focused on music by The Beatles, the entire soundtrack had to be executed perfectly. We had countless peer review sessions where the whole team gave multiple rounds of notes on every episode, refining the mix repeatedly to ensure it was in the absolute best shape possible before it left the building.

Sound design from a smaller perspective.

The story was largely told from the bugs’ point of view, which meant the world around them was huge. Humans were giants who needed enormous, thunderous footsteps as the bugs navigate the human world through action-packed sequences. The execution of this aspect made us extremely proud of what we’d achieved.

The sound of nature's small wonders.

We were so humbled at being recognised by our peers with an Emmy win for this project. At the time, Beat Bugs was the largest production we’d worked on. It was high-stress, high-stakes and high reward. After months of meticulously creating the highest quality product we possibly could, we’re so proud of the end result – immaculate sound tied in with breath-taking animation and music recordings performed by greats like Sia, P!nk, Chris Cornell, Jennifer Hudson, Regina Spektor, Robbie Williams, Rod Stewart and more.

Let's make
some magic.
